This year has been a difficult year for the coffee industry worldwide as coffee prices have been high for two years, making it difficult for high-quality coffee producers due to lack of supply and people fearing the loss of coffee leading to abandoning more sustainable farming practices.
The 2024 crop year has ended, now it is time for us to present some of the stories that happened during the past year and a call to action for Midori Farm partners.
Coffee prices
I remember in 2023 after the Covid pandemic, the average price of poor quality coffee was still at 35,000 VND/kg, but very quickly after that, the price of coffee exceeded 120,000 VND/kg. In early 2025, the price of coffee for cheap coffee is still at 130,000 VND/kg
For this reason, coffee prices around the world have fluctuated and increased, and the relationship between farmers and producers has changed. Due to the fear of theft when the coffee is still on the tree, many farmers have abandoned the practice of picking ripe berries, instead picking green berries to make instant coffee. Even if coffee producers raise prices, it is difficult to get good quality ripe coffee berries for processing and production.
Climate change
This year, climate change has caused water shortages in some places in the region, leading to a large number of coffee trees dying. At the same time, the unusual rain and drought caused more difficulties than imagined, predicting that productivity will decrease a lot because coffee flowers bloom in conditions of water shortage and bloom too early, leading to difficulty in care and most of them will fall before the harvest comes
At the same time, the unusually heavy rain lasting for a long time also makes the production of high-quality coffee more difficult than ever
Midori Farm's coffee production process
This year, for Robusta coffee, we focus on producing according to the Natural processing process, still focusing on picking 100% ripe fruit, then washing, drying on high racks and drying naturally in the sun.
To create more aroma for the fruit, we apply the method of fermenting the whole fruit in a sealed container or plastic bag for about 4 days
After the fruit is dry, we will peel and pick out defective beans as usual, quality control is really important to us and takes a lot of effort.
For Arabica, our partners have supplied ripe fruits with high ripeness standards (99%), fortunately because they are hard-working farmers who voluntarily pursue the method of cultivating without using chemicals in organic coffee cultivation. Therefore, we can process them in better quantities this year and next year.
This year we apply the Honey processing method for Arabica, the reason is that for Wash processing we have to use water to ferment the beans; then the water is acidic, making it difficult to handle later, sometimes destroying our cultivated land.
We still apply the process of drying on racks, picking 99.99% ripe fruits and harvesting and processing by hand.
Popular Coffee
Throughout 2024, coffee prices did not remain stable at one price but continuously went down and up, making it difficult for us to price and prepare capital to keep the goods. Therefore, this year we focus on connecting with local suppliers to provide us with products of moderate quality and affordable prices.
We hope that in 2025 the price will become stable again (not changing too much) so that farmers can feel secure in planting and we can feel secure in production
A few things in the coming years and invitation to cooperate
- With the change in processing and fermentation techniques; we believe that the position of Robusta coffee will increase in the coming years. Therefore, we are looking for high-quality coffee berries to graft and plant, helping to make the quality of coffee in our garden more consistent and better.
- Our coffee garden is over 30 years old and will be replaced in 2025, the replanting process will take about 4 years to return to normal productivity. - We call for everyone's cooperation so that our farmers can maintain the best quality and stabilize prices for consumers. As producers, we want to receive early orders and call for your companionship with farmers, please visit us and try to ask questions and request quality according to your wishes, we will try to meet according to our ability.
- We are also connecting with farmers and have a small scholarship fund for local children, families with difficult circumstances. We believe that with good relationships from local farmers, we can do a good job of creating the best products from Vietnam to your hands that others cannot do.
Behind your cup of coffee is the effort of many people.
Hope all peace will come to you!
Sincerely,
